THE SORME DAM - STUDY AND OBSERVATIONS DURING CONSTRUCTION

LE BARRAGE DE LA SORME - ETUDE ET OBSERVATIONS EN COURS DE CONSTRUCTION

THE SORME DAM IS AN EARTH DAM, 500 M LONG OF A MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF 15 M, BUILT ON HETEROGENEOUS LOW-QUALITY ALLUVIAL TERRAIN WHICH IS UP TO 8 TO 9 M THICK. THE STUDY DESCRIBED SHOWED THE PROBLEMS ARISING DURING CONSTRUCTION. BECAUSE OF THE HETEROGENEITY OF THE ALLUVIAL SOIL, THE SHORT-TERM BEHAVIOUR OF THE LATTER COULD NOT BE PREDICTED WITH ACCURACY, AND FAILURE OF THE DAM DURING CONSTRUCTION COULD NOT BE EXCLUDED TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE CONSTRUCTION RATE ENVISAGED. CONSEQUENTLY IT WAS NECESSARY TO CONTROL THE STABILITY OF THE STRUCTURE DURING CONSTRUCTION, AND OBSERVATIONS (MAINLY PORE WATER PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS) WERE MADE AT TWO PLACES THROUGH THE STRUCTURE DURING CONSTRUCTION. THE STABILITY OF THE DAM WAS THUS CONTROLLED AT VARIOUS STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION: BY CALCULATION OF EFFECTIVE STRESSES; BY AN ORIGINAL RAPID METHOD OF CONTROL WHICH FACILITATES THE DETERMINATION OF A LOWER LIMIT OF THE SAFETY COEFFICIENT FROM THE MEASURED PORE WATER PRESSURE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE MAIN PHASES OF THE STUDY (GEOLOGICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL STUDY, DESIGN, STABILITY CALCULATIONS) AND OF STABILITY CONTROLS DURING CONSTRUCTION. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO INTERPRET THE OBSERVATIONS MADE ON THE CONSOLIDATION OF ALLUVIA.
