THE SAINT NAZAIRE-SAINT BREVIN BRIDGE. PART 2: INFRASTRUCTURE AND ANCILLARY STRUCTURES OF THE SAINT NAZAIRE BRIDGE

LE PONT DE SAINT NAZAIRE-SAINT BREVIN - II : LES INFRASTRUCTURES ET LES OUVRAGES ANNEXES DU PONT DE SAINT NAZAIRE

REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE SELECTION OF THE DESIGN OF THE BRIDGE AS A FUNCTION OF THE GEOLOGICAL AND NAVIGATIONAL CONDITIONS, ROAD TRAFFIC AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON THE CENTRAL METAL SECTION OF THE STAYED GIRDER TYPE AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE DOUBLE-CURVED ACCESS VIADUCTS IN THE SHAPE OF THE LETTER S. THE DESIGN AND STRUCTURE OF THE DECKS OF THE ACCESS VIADUCTS ARE DESCRIBED (STATICALLY DETERMINATE STRUCTURE, PRECAST PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS CONTAINING POZZOLITH AS AN ADMIXTURE), TOGETHER WITH THE FOUNDATIONS (CONCRETE PILES CAST-IN-SITU INSIDE METAL DUCTS), AND PILES RESTING ON PILES, THE HEAD OF WHICH IS RESTRAINED IN A REINFORCED CONCRETE FOOTING. THE CONDUCT OF THE WORK IS OUTLINED: SINKING OF FOUNDATIONS THROUGH THE SEA, VIBRATORY DRIVING OR DRIVING OF THE METAL DUCTS, PREPARATION OF ALL TYPES OF CONCRETE IN A MIXING PLANT LOCATED ON THE SURFACE OF THE SEA, SITE ON ACCESS EMBANKMENTS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PRECAST BEAMS, TRANSPORT AND INSTALLATION OF BEAMS.
