CHAPTER 1 PRESENTS A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE FRICTION OF RUBBER; CHAPTER 2 DEALS WITH THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TYRE WHICH HAVE A DIRECT INFLUENCE ON TRACTION; CHAPTER 3 DESCRIBES THE TRACTION MECHANISM ON DRY SURFACE AND EMPHASIZES THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE TWISTING AND LOCALIZED SLIDING OF THE ROLLING STRIP TO THE GENERAL MECHANISM; CHAPTER 4 IS SOLELY CONCERNED WITH THE GEOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PAVEMENT; CHAPTER 5 CONSIDERS THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF TRACTION ON WET OR ABNORMALLY WET ROADS; THE FRICTION OF THE TYRE ON ICED SURFACINGS IS STUDIED IN CHAPTER 6 AND A SIMPLE MODEL OF ADHESION MECHANISM IS DERIVED; CHAPTER 7 DEALS WITH TYRE WEAR; THE NEXT TWO CHAPTERS THE VARIOUS EFFECTS AND ALTERNATIVES OF TYRE DESIGN WITH A VIEW TO IMPROVING FRICTION.
