THE SOFIA BRIDGE IN MADAGASCAR
LE PONT SUR LA SOFIA A MADAGASCAR
THE AUTHORS, AFTER SEVERAL COMMENTS ON THE HYDROLOGICAL REGIME OF SOFIA, THE CHOICE OF THE SITE AND THE SUBGRADE, GIVE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS. THE 810 M LONG BRIDGE, INCLUDING A PAVEMENT 7 M WIDE AND 2 FOOTPATHS 0.50 M WIDE, IS COMPOSED OF 12 SPANS, THE PIERS AND ABUTMENTS ARE FOUNDED ON PILES CONSTRUCTED WITH STEEL TUBES, DRIVEN AND CONCRETED IN SITU. THE DECK IS COMPOSED OF A VARIABLE DEPTH PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BOX-SECTION BEAM. IT WAS CONSTRUCTED IN SECTIONS OF 80 M LENGTH BALANCED ON A PILE. CERTAIN SECTIONS AT THE EXTREMITIES OF THE DECK WERE PLACED IN SITU USING STANDARD SCAFFOLDING.
