BEHAVIOUR OF CONCRETE: PROPENSITY TO CRACKING AND BRITTLENESS. CRITICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC STUDY

COMPORTEMENT DU BETON HYDRAULIQUE : FISSURABILITE ET FRAGILITE - ETUDE BIBLIOGRAPHIQUE ET CRITIQUE

THE USE OF CONCRETE CAN BE EXTENDED IF ITS PROPENSITY TO CRACKING AND BRITTLENESS CAN BE CURED. A DISTINCTION IS MADE BETWEEN THE CAUSE AND THE PROPAGATION OF CRACKS. RUPTURE MECHANISM IS THE DISCIPLINE WHICH DEALS WITH CRACK PROPAGATION; IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT IT SHOULD BE APPLIED TO CONCRETE STRUCTURES. IN SPITE OF INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS, NUMEROUS DIFFICULTIES REMAIN TO BE SOLVED AND SOME RESULTS CAN BE ERRONEOUS. MENTION IS MADE OF THE PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN FOR CONDUCTING FURTHER RESEARCH (USE OF FIBRES). THE PROBLEM OF CRACK INITIATION APPEARS LINKED WITH THAT OF CRACKS IN STRUCTURES WHEN THERE ARE NO EXTERNAL MECHANICAL STRESSES, UNDER THE ACTION OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CAUSES. THE CRACKS WHICH ARE HARMFUL OCCUR WHEN CONCRETE IS YOUNG, THAT IS TO SAY, WHEN IT IS EASIER TO MODIFY THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MATERIAL. THIS IS WHY IT SEEMS POSSIBLE TO USE THE RESULTS OF THE SAME INVESTIGATIONS TO: (1) REDUCE THE RISK OF HARMFUL CRACKS IN THE SHORT-TERM, AND (2) SIMPLIFY THE RULES OF THE ART OF CONCRETE. TWO EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN: CRACKS IN FRESH CONCRETE AND LOW-POROSITY CEMENT PASTE, AND EARLY CRACKS LINKED WITH THE HYDRATION OF CEMENT.
