TEST METHODS USED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF KISCC IN A SALINE MEDIUM: APPLICATION TO THE CASE OF SEVERAL HIGH STRENGTH STEELS
METHODES D'ESSAIS UTILISEES POUR LA DETERMINATION DE KISCC EN MILIEU SALIN : APPLICATION AU CAS DE QUELQUES ACIERS A TRES HAUTE RESISTANCE
THE APPLICATION OF RUPTURE MECHANICS TO THE STUDY OF CORROSION UNDER STRESS OF MATERIALS WITH HIGH ELASTIC LIMIT HAS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPARATUS AND TEST METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD OF CRACKING IN THE PRESENCE OF A CORROSIVE MEDIUM (KISCC) AND THE KINETICS OF CRACK PROPAGATION AS A FUNCTION OF THE STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR KI. THE METHODS RELY ON THE UTILISATION OF PRE-CRACKED TEST SAMPLES WHICH CAN BE SUBJECTED TO EITHER CONSTANT LOAD (TYPE CT OR CANTILEVER TEST SAMPLE) OR TO CONSTANT OPENING (TYPE WOL TEST SAMPLE) IN THE TEST MEDIUM. EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT ON TWO VERY HIGH PERFORMANCE LIGHT ALLOY STEELS (35 NCD 16, 40 CDV 20) AND ON AN ALLOY WITH 18% NICKEL IN A 35 G/L NACL SALINE SOLUTION, HAVE INDICATED THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES. THE CONSTANT LOAD TESTS HAVE ALLOWED THE DETERMINATION OF KISCC AND RATE OF CRACKING OF EACH OF THE MATERIALS. FOLLOWING THE DISCUSSION OF CERTAIN DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN THE DETERMINATION OF KISCC FOR A WOL TYPE TEST SAMPLE FOR TWO OF THE STEELS STUDIED, SOME INDICATIONS ARE GIVEN WHICH SHOULD RESULT IN MORE SATISFACTORY RESULTS, FOR THE CASE OF THE CONSTANT OPENING TEST.
