USE OF NON-WOVEN MATERIALS FOR DRAINAGE. APPLICATION TO FINE SOIL EMBANKMENTS DURING CONSOLIDATION

UTILISATION DES TEXTILES NON-TISSES POUR LE DRAINAGE, APPLICATION AUX REMBLAIS DE SOLS FINS EN COURS DE CONSOLIDATION

THIS REPORT WHICH REPRODUCES THE TEXT OF A THESIS PRESENTED AT THE UNIVERSITE CLAUDE-BERNARD IN LYON, IS CONCERNED WITH THE USE OF NON-WOVEN MATERIALS AS A DRAINAGE LAYER IN FINE SOIL EMBANKENTS BUILT WITH A HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT. PART 1 DEALS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-WOVEN MATERIAL SHEETS VARYING IN NATURE AND STRUCTURE AND WITH THE DEFINITION OF SOME OF THEIR PROPERTIES, ESPECIALLY COMPRESSIBILITY AND PERMEABILITY THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHICH IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE FOR THEIR LAYING IN AN EMBANKMENT. PART 2 IS A THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE CONSOLIDATION OF AN EMBANKMENT DRAINED BY MEANS OF NON-WOVEN MATERIALS. THE TERZAGHI ONE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION THEORY IS APPLIED, AND IT IS SHOWN THAT ITS APPLICATION TO THE PHENOMENON STUDIED IS NOT SATISFACTORY AS THE LIMIT CONDITIONS ARE NOT RESPECTED. A TWO-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION SYSTEM IS PROPOSED WHICH TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE DISSIPATION OF PRESSURE IN THE DRAINS. THE FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD IS USED AND FACILITATES COMPUTERIZED CALCULATIONS. EXAMPLES OF PRACTICAL CASES ARE GIVEN IN WHICH PARAMETERS ARE VARIED: THICKNESS OF SOIL LAYERS, DRAIN THICKNESS, EMBANKMENT WIDTH, METHOD OF LOADING THE EMBANKMENT, SOIL PERMEABILITY, DRAIN PERMEABILITY.
