IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENT IN THE STABILITY OF A SAND-SLAG. MIX DESIGN - OBSERVATIONS IN-SITU

THE AUTHORS BRIEFLY RELATE THE RESULTS OF A BRIEF STUDY CARRIED OUT IN 1972 AT THE LYON LABORATORY, WHICH HAS SHOWN THE PRE-SETTING IMPROVEMENT THAT COULD RESULT FROM INCORPORATING CRUSHED SAND INTO THE FORMULA OF A SAND-SLAG. THE STUDY CONSISTS INITIALLY IN INVESTIGATING THE VARIATION IN THE RESISTANCE TO PUNCHING OF COMPACTED SAMPLES WHEN THE RATIO OF ROUND SAND (0/5 MM ALLUVIUM) / CRUSHED SAND (0/5 MM FROM CRUSHING THE SAME ALLUVIUM) IS VARIED, THE PERCENTAGE OF GRANULATED SLAG REMAINING CONSTANT. IT CAN BE ESTIMATED THAT THE AMOUNT OF 25% OF CRUSHED SAND ALLOWS THE IMMEDIATE RESISTANCE OF THE MIX TO PUNCHING TO BE TREBLED. IT WAS ALSO PROPOSED TO VERIFY IF THE AMOUNT OF 25% OF CRUSHED SAND WOULD ALLOW THE SLAG PERCENTAGE TO BE REDUCED FROM 25% TO 15%. HOWEVER IT APPEARS THAT THE SLAG DOSAGE REMAINS PREPONDERANT, THE PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL BONDS WHICH HAVE BEEN CREATED BY THE PRESENCE OF THE SLAG BEING THE PRINCIPAL CAUSES OF OBTAINING THE FINAL STRENGTH. FOLLOWING THE TESTS IT APPEARS THAT THE QUANTITY OF CRUSHED SAND LEADING TO OPTIMUM STABILITY IS CLOSE TO 30%. THE SAND-SLAG THUS CORRECTED APPEARS AS A FLEXIBLE MATERIAL WITH EASY WORKING, EVEN IN LATE AUTUMN UNDER DIFFICULT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS.
