THE DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY ACHIEVED BY THE SEEDLING SELECTION PROCESS IS NOT GREAT. THE TYPE OF UNIFORMITY NEEDED IN THE TREES IS IN RESISTANCE TO MAJOR INSECT AND DISEASE PESTS AND TOLERANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS FACTORS. VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION OF SELECTED CULTIVARS BY GRAFTING, BUDDING, OR ROOTING RESULTS IN A POPULATION WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY, EVEN THOUGH VARIABLE SEEDLING MATERIAL IS FREQUENTLY USED AS UNDERSTOCK. EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE NEW TREE CULTIVARS DO NOT REPRESENT ANY REAL IMPROVEMENT IN PEST RESISTANCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL TOLERANCE, THEY HAVE BEEN RECEIVED ENTHUSIASTICALLY BY TREE PLANTING AGENCIES, BECAUSE OF GENETIC, ESTHETIC AND ECONOMIC REASONS FOR UNIFORMITY. /AUTHOR/
