THE MECHANICS OF DUNE FORMATION IN ERODIBLE-BED CHANNELS

THE MECHANICS OF DUNE FORMATION ARE ANALYZED ON THE BASIS OF INTERACTION OF FLOW CONDITIONS AND SAND WAVES. THE RELATION OF WAVE LENGTH, DEPTH OF WATER, AND FLOW VELOCITY IS DERIVED FROM THE CONDITION THAT THE PERIODIC VARIATION OF SEDIMENT TRANSPORT CAPACITY SHOULD BE COINCIDENT WITH THE CONFIGURATION OF DUNES IN THE CHANNEL BED. THE PROPOSED MECHANISM OF DUNE FORMATION IS ILLUSTRATED BY THE COMPOUNDING OF SEVERAL WAVES GENERATED SIMULTANEOUSLY, HAVING DIFFERENT WAVE LENGTHS. THE HEIGHT OF DUNES IS ANALYZED IN CONNECTION WITH BED LOAD TRANSPORTATION.
