VALUES TAKEN FROM POST-MORTEM STATISTICS FOR WEST BERLIN ARE COMPARED WITH THREE FROM THE LITERATURE. HEART AND CIRCULATION ILLNESSES ARE THOSE WHICH CAUSE THE MOST FATAL ACCIDENTS ON THE ROAD. MEN BETWEEN 50 AND 70 YEARS ARE THOSE MOSTLY AFFECTED. IN ALMOST 50 PERCENT OF THE CASES THE DRIVER MANAGED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM COMPREHENSIBLY, FATAL CASES WOULD NEED TO BE STUDIED BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE JOURNEY. ILLNESSES WHICH TEMPORARILY CAUSE LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS PRESENT A PARTICULAR PROBLEM DIAGNOSTICALLY. IN SUCH CASES TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN SUDDEN DEATH AND DEATH FROM INJURIES RECEIVED IN THE ACCIDENT CAN BE DIFFICULT, AS IS THE DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN ALCOHOL AND PRESCRIBED DRUGS AS AN ACCIDENT CAUSE. SPECIAL PROBLEMS ARISE WITH CASES OF DELAYED DEATH. FINALLY THE POSSIBILITY OF SUICIDE AND CRIMES INVOLVING DEATH SHOULD BE CONSIDERED, SUCH AS POISONING. SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO ACCIDENT RESEARCH ARE DISCUSSED.
