THE MEASUREMENT OF THE PASSING SIGHT DISTANCE BY CINE-CAMERA
THE FREQUENCY OF OVERTAKING ACCIDENTS ON TWO-LANE ROADS REQUIRES THAT REASONABLE PASSING SIGHT DISTANCES BE ASSURED. THE METHOD EMPLOYED IN JAPAN FOR THIS PURPOSE IS THAT OF AASHO. THE PRESENT PAPER REPORTS MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS OF PASSING SIGHT DISTANCES ON A JAPANESE HIGHWAY. AS RADAR AND SUPERSONIC WAVES ARE NOT ALWAYS SATISFACTORY AS TO ACCURACY, HANDLING, SCOPE, AND COST IN MEASURING DISTANCE BETWEEN VEHICLES, A 16 MM MOTION PICTURE CAMERA WAS ADAPTED TO SUPPLEMENT THE OTHER METHODS. THE PROCEDURES AND TEST RESULTS ARE DESCRIBED. THE AVERAGE VALUES DETERMINED WERE VERY CLOSE TO THE REDUCED PASSING SIGHT DISTANCES OF SEVERAL COUNTRIES; VALUES USED IN SPAIN WERE CLOSE TO THE LOWER LIMITS DETERMINED IN THIS TEST.
