FATIGUE TESTS OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE I-BEAMS

TESTS WERE RUN TO DETERMINE THE FATIGUE LIFE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE I-BEAMS OVERLOADED TO CAUSE FLEXURAL AND INCLINED CRACKING PRIOR TO REPEATED STATIC LOADING. EARLIER TESTS HAD SHOWN THAT SUCH LOADING COULD RESULT IN SHEAR FATIGUE FAILURE. THE FLEXURAL FATIGUE LIFE OF THE TEST BEAMS WAS LESS THAN EXPECTED FROM AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF STRAND, AND ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATION IS URGED. THE TESTS DEMONSTRATED THAT PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS HAVE REMARKABLE SHEAR FATIGUE RESISTANCE: WITH ENOUGH WEB REINFORCEMENT TO DEVELOP THEIR FLEXURAL CAPACITY, THEY CAN BE SUBJECTED TO OVERLOADS WHICH CAUSE EXTENSIVE CRACKING WITHOUT SUBSEQUENT DANGER OF SHEAR FATIGUE FAILURE UNDER DESIGN LOADS. FURTHERMORE, SHEAR FATIGUE FAILURES DO NOT OCCUR SUDDENLY BUT GIVE CONSIDERABLE WARNING.
