PROTECTION BY MEANS OF INFLATABLE AIRBAG
LA PROTECTION PAR SAC GONFLABLE
PART 1 OF THE REPORT REVIEWS RECENT STUDIES CARRIED OUT IN THE USA AND LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE INFLATABLE AIRBAGS THAT ENSURE SATISFACTORY PROTECTION UP TO SPEEDS OF 65 KM/H DURING HEAD-ON COLLISIONS AGAINST A FIXED BARRIER. RESULTS ARE EVALUATED AGAINST THE VALUES PRESCRIBED BY THE US STANDARD FMVSS 208 (THE FULL TEXT IS GIVEN IN AN INDEX). IT SEEMS THAT PROBLEMS INHERENT TO THIS TYPE OF DEVICE, SUCH AS NOISE, EXTRA PRESSURE OR TOXICITY ARE NOW SATISFACTORILY SOLVED, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND THE SENSING OF IMPACT REMAINS DIFFICULT AND IS NOT YET RELIABLY SOLVED. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE PROBLEM OF CHILDREN. FOR MEDIUM-SIZED EUROPEAN VEHICLES, THE ADAPTATION OF THE INFLATABLE BAG SEEMS MORE DIFFICULT TO CARRY OUT. THIS WAS DEMONSTRATED BY A COMPARATIVE STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE ONSER OF THE EFFICIENCY OF AIR BAGS AND THREE-POINT SAFETY BELT UNDER REAL CONDITIONS: HEAD-ON COLLISION AT 48 KM/H AGAINST FIXED BARRIER, HEAD-ON COLLISION BETWEEN TWO VEHICLES AT 48 KM/H, IMPACT TEST AGAINST SAFETY FENCE AT 80 KM/H (ALDERSON VIP 50 A ANTHROPOMETRIC DUMMIES). IT IS SUGGESTED THAT EFFORTS BE DIRECTED IN THE FUTURE TOWARDS THE STEERING COLUMN, PROTECTION OF LOWER LIMBS, AND EFFECTIVENESS IN NON-FRONTAL IMPACTS.
