ACCURACY OF STRUCTURAL MODELS

THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ACCURACY OF MODEL RESULTS IS EXPLORED. BEFORE A DECISION IS MADE TO PROCEED WITH A MODEL STUDY THE DECISION MAKER SHOULD BE COGNIZANT OF THE ACCURACY WHICH CAN REASONABLY BE EXPECTED IN A MODEL STUDY, AND ONCE THE DECISION TO PROCEED IS MADE, THE MODEL ENGINEER SHOULD KNOW OF THE TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES WHICH WILL LEAD TO USEFUL, DEPENDABLE RESULTS. SOME EXAMPLES OF BASIC RELIABILITY DATA FOR MODEL MATERIAL PROPERTIES, FABRICATION ACCURACIES TO BE EXPECTED, LOADING TECHNIQUE ERRORS, AND MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES ARE PRESENTED TO ILLUSTRATE THE SORT OF INFORMATION THAT THE MODEL ENGINEER SHOULD BE AWARE OF BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH A MODEL STUDY. THE PAPER CONCLUDES WITH SOME CASE STUDIES OF ACTUAL MODEL PROJECTS (RESEARCH AND DESIGN) WHICH INDICATE GOOD MODEL PRACTICE AND AT THE SAME TIME INDICATE THE CONFIDENCE LEVELS WHICH CAN BE ATTACHED TO A STRUCTURAL MODEL RESULT. /ACI/
