DYNAMIC FATIGUE LOADING STUDIES CARRIED OUT AT THE INSTITUTE ON THE FULL SCALE TEST RIG HAVE SHOWN THAT THE PLASTIC DEFORMATIONS OF BITUMINOUS LAYERS ARE LATERAL DISPLACEMENTS WITHIN THE PARTICLE STRUCTURE. THEY OCCUR WHEN THE DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS IS INSUFFICIENT TO ABSORB THE LOAD-INDUCED DEFORMATIONS ELASTICALLY. BASED ON THESE RESULTS A METHOD OF CALCULATING PLASTIC DEFORMATIONS WAS DEVELOPED. THIS IS TO BE TESTED BY MEANS OF THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED FROM THE HILPOLTSTEIN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD.
