MEASUREMENT OF THE RELATION BETWEEN RAIN INTENSITY AND WATER FILM DEPTH, AND EVALUATION OF ROAD WETNESS

CURRENT KNOWLEDGE IS INSUFFICIENT FOR DETERMINING WATER FILM DEPTH WITH REFERENCE TO TEMPORAL AND LOCAL INFLUENCING FACTORS, AND PROVIDES NO INFORMATION ON THE OCCURRENCE OF THESE FACTORS. BY MEANS OF PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE MAGNITUDES WHICH OCCUR, THEIR RELATION TO THE MOST IMPORTANT TEMPORAL AND LOCAL PARAMETERS IS TO BE EVALUATED BY MEANS OF SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS. THROUGH OBSERVATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS THE HUMIDITY CONDITIONS OF THE ROAD SURFACE ARE TO BE DIFFERENTIATED BY A CLEAR TERMINOLOGY. OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTIVE CRITERIA FOR DESCRIBING THE CONDITION OF THE ROAD ARE TO BE DEVELOPED AND RELATED TO ONE ANOTHER. MEASUREMENTS OF WATER FILM DEPTHS ON ROAD SURFACES AND SIMULTANEOUS DETERMINATION OF PRECIPITATION INTENSITIES CAN BE LINKED WITH VISUALLY SUBJECTIVE DEGREES OF WETNESS. FOR THIS IT IS NECESSARY TO DEVELOP MEASURING APPARATUS WHICH ALLOWS CONDITIONS ABOVE THE MAJORITY OF MACRO ROUGH PEAKS (WATER FILM AREA) AND THE CONDITIONS BELOW (AREA OF WETNESS) TO BE MEASURED. A PORTABLE APPARATUS WAS BUILT FOR MEASURING THE WATER FILM DEPTH, THE DIMENSIONS OF WHICH ENABLE WATER DEPTHS IN RUTS AND PUDDLES TO BE MEASURED, AS WELL AS THOSE ON SMOOTH ROADS. THE SECOND APPARATUS SERVES FOR DETERMINING QUANTITIES OF WATER IN ROUGH AREAS. THESE QUANTITIES OF WATER ARE SUCKED UP WITH AN EXTREMELY ABSORBENT MATERIAL AND DETERMINED BY MEANS OF COMPARATIVE WEIGHING BEFORE AND AFTER MEASUREMENT. MEASUREMENTS WHICH ARE TO BE UNDERTAKEN WITH THIS EQUIPMENT WILL BE USED TO DEFINE THE VARIOUS STAGES OF WET ROADS. THEY WILL ALSO SERVE TO ANALYSE THE FORMATION OF WATER FILMS IN RELATION TO PRECIPITATION INTENSITY, PRECIPITATION DURATION AND SPECIFIC SURFACE TEXTURE. IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO USE THE RESULTS TO DETERMINE THE TIME AT WHICH A FILM OF WATER OCCURS IN RELATION TO THE ABOVE PARAMETERS.
