DURING PEAK HOURS, INDIVIDUAL SIGNALISED JUNCTIONS ARE OFTEN OVERLOADED. IF SPACE IS INSUFFICIENT THE CONGESTION CAN SPREAD QUICKLY TO OTHER PARTS OF THE NETWORK. THE OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS CONGESTION AND ITS EFFECTS CAN BE REDUCED BY CONTROLS AFFECTING GREEN TIME IN RELATION TO THE OCCUPANCY OF THE CONGESTED AREA. A REQUIREMENT IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF ACTUAL QUEUE LENGTHS. TO DETERMINE THESE A SIMPLE RECOGNITION AND TRANSFER SYSTEM IS TO BE DEVELOPED. IN THE WORKING OUT OF CONTROL CRITERIA RELATIONS BETWEEN CONTROL MEASURES IN A PART OF THE NETWORK HAVE TO BE EXAMINED AND TAKEN ACCOUNT OF IN THE CONTROL CONCEPT.
