DISCONTINUITY OF THE STRENGTH IN BENDING AND SHEAR OF REINFORCED BEAMS
PAPERS ANALYZING THE ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF BEAMS SUBJECT TO BENDING AND SHEAR TREAT THE SHEAR REINFORCEMENT AS A CONTINOUS ENTITY. HOWEVER, THE SHEAR REINFORCEMENT IS DISCRETE WHICH HAS AN INFLUENCE ON THE ULTIMATE BAHAVIOR OF THE BEAM. ASSUMING A MODEL OF THE SHEAR-BENDING STRENGTH, IT CAN BE SHOWN THAT THE INCLINATION OF THE SHEAR CRACK AND ALSO THE SPACING OF SHEAR REINFORCEMENT ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS. THE INCLINATION OF SHEAR CRACK IS A RANDOM VARIABLE WHICH IS ONLY PARTIALLY DEPENDENT ON CONDITIONS AT ULTIMATE LOAD. THE ANALYSIS OF A SET OF "COMPUTER BEAMS" HAS SHOWN INTERESTING DISCONTINUITIES OF THE RATIO OF THE ULTIMATE MOMENT AT SHEAR-BENDING FAILURE AND THE ULTIMATE MOMENT AT PURE BENDING WHEN PLOTTED TOWARDS THE SHEAR SPAN RATIO. /AUTHOR/
