LONGITUDINAL CRACK IN PRESTRESSED BOX BEAM

A WIDE AND DEEP LONGITUDINAL CRACK DEVELOPED IN THE BOTTOM OF A BRIDGE BOX BEAM AND EXTENDED FROM ONE SUPPORT ALMOST TO MID-SPAN. A DETERMINATION OF THE MOST PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE CRACK AND AN EVALUATION OF THE ULTIMATE AND RESERVE STRENGTH OF THE BEAM BY LOAD TESTING TO FAILURE WERE MADE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN TO PREVENT FUTURE SIMILAR CRACKING BEHAVIOR AS FOLLOWS: USE DRAINS OF MINIMUM 1 1/4 IN DIAMETER TO DRAIN POSSIBLE ACCUMULATION OF WATER IN THE VOID COMPARTMENTS; USE NON-PERMEABLE TUBES AS FORMS FOR THE VOID COMPARTMENTS IN BOX BEAMS; PLACE VERTICAL STIRRUPS IN THE LOWER PORTION OF BOX BEAMS AT A SPACING NOT TO EXCEED 3/4 THE EFFECTIVE DEPTH OF THE MEMBER NOR 24 IN., WHICHEVER IS SMALLER. /AUTHOR/
