COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS WITH ULTIMATE STRENGTH THEORY FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS IN BIAXIAL BENDING

A THEORY FOR THE ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS OF ANY SHAPE AND DISPOSITION OF REINFORCING STEEL WAS RECENTLY PUBLISHED. THE PRESENT PAPER COMPARES AVAILABLE TEST DATA OF COLUMNS SUBJECTED TO UNIAXIAL AND BIAXIAL BENDING WITH THE PROPOSED THEORY. THE GREATEST NUMBER OF AVAILABLE TEST RESULTS RELATES TO FOUR-BAR COLUMNS, AND RESULTS OF 240 FOUR-BAR COLUMN TESTS INDIVIDUALLY EXAMINED. ASSUMING THAT THE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE IN EACH COLUMN WAS 0.85 OF ITS CONTROL CYLINDER THE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE IN EACH COLUMN WAS 0.85 OF ITS CONTROL CYLINDER STRENGTH, THEN FOR ALL COLUMN RESULTS, THE AVERAGE RATIO OF OBSERVED TO THEORETICAL ULTIMATE STRENGTH WAS 0.84. HOWEVER, THIS RATIO TENDS TO UNITY AS THE TEST SPECIMEN DIMENSIONS APPROACH THOSE OF CONCRETE COLUMNS USED IN INDUSTRY. ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN CHARTS FOR COLUMNS CONTAINING FOUR BARS, OR BUNDLES OF BARS, LOCATED IN THE CORNERS OF RECTANGULAR SECTIONS ARE INCLUDED. THESE CHARTS HAVE BEEN DERIVED FROM THE THEORY MENTIONED ABOVE, FOR CROSS-SECTION PROPORTIONS AND REINFORCEMENT POSITIONS WHICH CORRESPOND CLOSELY TO THE COLUMNS WHOSE TEST RESULTS ARE ANALYSED IN THIS PAPER. /AUTHOR/
