BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE UNDER COMPRESSIVE LOADINGS
AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE STRENGTH AND BEHAVIOR OF PLAIN CONCRETE SUBJECTED TO REPETITIONS OF COMPRESSIVE STRESS OF RELATIVELY HIGH MAGNITUDE IS DESCRIBED AND EVALUATED. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LOADING AND STRESS- STRAIN RELATIONSHIPS OF 46 SHORT RECTANGULAR COLUMNS ARE STUDIED. EXPRESSIONS FOR THESE RELATIONSHIPS ARE DERIVED AND USED TO ESTIMATE THE RESPONSE OF PLAIN CONRETE SUBJECTED TO VARYING LOAD HISTORIES. THE EXPRESSIONS DEVELOPED ARE FUNCTIONS OF THE ULTIMATE STRESS AND STRAIN VALUES OF STANDARD 6 X 12-IN. CONTROL CYLINDERS AND THE LOADING HISTORY. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE RESPONSE AT A GIVEN POINT IN THE LOAD HISTORY IS DEPENDENT ON THE PRECEEDING LOADING AND THAT THE NUMBER OF CYCLES TO FAILURE CAN BE REASONABLY ESTIMATED. /ASCE/
