CORROSION PROMOTING ACTION OF ALKALI AND ALKALINE EARTH THIOCYANATES IN CONCRETE ADMIXTURES

THE AIM IS TO CLARIFY THE EFFECTS OF ALKALI AND ALKALINE EARTH THIOCYANATES IN CONCRETE ADMIXTURES ON THE PROCESS OF CORROSION. DURING THE SUPERVISION OF CONCRETE ADMIXTURES IT WAS OBSERVED DURING ELECTRO-CHEMICAL TESTING THAT ALKALI AND/OR ALKALINE EARTH THIOCYANATES HAD A CORROSION-PROMOTING ACTION. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH WHETHER IT IS NECESSARY TO SPECIFY A MAXIMUM PERMITTED CONTENT OF THESE CHEMICALS IN THE ADMIXTURES, IN THE SAME WAY AS FOR HALOGENIDES. ELECTRO-CHEMICAL STUDIES ARE TO BE MADE OF ALKALI AND ALKALINE EARTH THIOCYANATES AND COMPARED WITH SIMILAR STUDIES ON CALCIUM CHLORIDE. EXPOSURE TESTS OF CARBONATED AND NON-CARBONATED SAMPLES UNDER PRACTICAL CONDITIONS ARE INTENDED TO VERIFY THE RESULTS OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL TESTS.
