BUCKLING OF RIGIDLY-JOINTED PLANE TRUSSES
A DIRECT METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE CRITICAL LOADING PATTERN OF A RIGIDLY JOINTED TRUSS AS A WHOLE IS PRESENTED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE EQUATION OF THE CRITICAL LOAD IS INDEPENDENT OF THE SHAPE OF THE ASSUMED DISTORTED CONFIGURATION OF THE TRUSS AND HENCE NO TIME SHOULD BE LOST IN SEARCHING FOR THE DISTORTED CONFIGURATION THAT YIELDS THE LEAST BUCKLING LOAD. THE METHOD WAS APPLIED ON TWO-PANEL, THREE-PANEL AND FOUR-PANEL EQUILATERAL TRIANGULATED TRUSSES, AND CURVES GIVING THE BUCKLING LOADS AS WELL AS THE BUCKLING LENGTHS ARE PRESENTED FOR DIFFERENT STIFFNESSES OF LOWER CHORD AND WEB MEMBERS IN EACH CASE. THE ANALYSIS WAS EXTENDED TO INCLUDE THE EFFECT OF RIGID GUSSET PLATES. AN EMPIRICAL FORMULA GIVING THE EFFECTIVE LENGTH WAS SUGGESTED FOR USE IN DESIGN RULES AND WORKING FORMULA. A REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND APPROXIMATIONS USED IS ALSO INCLUDED. /ASCE/
