TORSION IN SPANDREL BEAMS
A PROCEDURE IS PRESENTED FOR ESTABLISHING THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE TORSIONAL DEFORMATION OF THE SPANDREL BEAMS AND THE FLEXURAL BENDING IN THE ADJOINING SLAB AND THE SUPPORTING COLUMNS. THE METHOD IS BASED ON A SIMPLIFIED STRUCTURE CONSISTING OF CLOSELY SPACED INDEPENDENT BEAMS MONOLITHICALLY FRAMED INTO THE SPANDREL BEAMS WHICH IN TURN ARE MONOLITHICALLY CAST WITH THE SUPPORTING COLUMNS. THE RESULTING TORSIONAL MOMENTS IN THE SPANDREL BEAMS ARE PRESENTED DIAGRAMMATICALLY WITH KNOWN FRAME CONSTANTS AS PARAMETERS. A TYPICAL INTERIOR SPAN OF A MULTISPAN STRUCTURE AND THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPANS OF A THREE-SPAN STRUCTURE ARE SHOWN. /AUTHOR/
