AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO SET UP CRITERIA TO BE USED BY PROJECT AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERS DEALING WITH THE SURFACING OF ENGINEERING STRUCTURES, DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF BRIDGE (METAL OR CONCRETE), STRESSES TO WHICH THE PAVEMENT IS SUBJECTED, PREDICTABLE TRAFFIC VOLUME AND AVAILABLE MATERIALS. AMONG THE SOLUTIONS PUT FORWARD FOR BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS ARE THE WATERPROOFING OF BRIDGE DECKS WITH SOFT MASTIC (BITUMEN-FILLER-RUBBER) AND THE USE OF GUSSASPHALT. THE SOLUTIONS PROPOSED FOR RIGID PAVEMENTS CORRESPOND MORE OR LESS TO SWISS SPECIFICATIONS. THE LAST PART OF THE PAPER DEALS WITH JOINTS AND ANCILLARY ELEMENTS OF BRIDGE DECKS THAT HAVE A MARKED INFLUENCE ON THE COMFORT OF VEHICLE OCCUPANTS AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE STRUCTURE ITSELF.
