THIS STANDARD SPECIFIES TWO METHODS OF CALCULATING THE LOUDNESS LEVEL OF A COMPLEX SOUND; THESE METHODS DIFFER FROM ONE ANOTHER NOT ONLY BY THE SOUND ANALYSIS METHOD BUT ALSO BY THE CALCULATION PRINCIPLES. THE FIRST METHOD (METHOD A) USES PHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED FROM AN OCTAVE BAND ANALYSIS. THE SECOND METHOD (METHOD B) USES A SPECTRAL ANALYSIS IN THIRD OCTAVE BANDS. METHOD B GENERALLY GIVES SLIGHTLY HIGHER RESULTS THAN METHOD A FOR THE SAME SOUNDS, BUT APPEARS TO TAKE BETTER ACCOUNT OF VARIATIONS IN SPECTRA, WHICH ARE LIMITED TO NARROW FREQUENCY BANDS.
