THE OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH IS (1) TO OPTIMIZE THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS; (2) TO DRAFT A MANUAL FOR THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS WHICH WILL BE DISSEMINATED IN THE FIRST HALF OF 1979 (LCPC-SETRA DOCUMENT) WITH A VIEW TO CONDUCTING LATER INVESTIGATIONS IN THE CETE; (3) TO CONTINUE RESEARCH IN THIS FIELD TO CONTROL THE VALIDITY OF THE ASSUMPTIONS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN THE RATIONAL PAVEMENT DESIGN METHOD, USING THE BEHAVIOUR OF SOIL AND UNBOUND GRANULAR MATERIALS UNDER REPEATED LOADS. IT IS ALSO PROPOSED TO CHECK THE PAVEMENT DESIGN METHODS FOR DIFFERENT QUALITIES OF GRAVEL. THE INTEREST OF STAGE-BY-STAGE ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE INVESTIGATED.
