THE RULES FOR THE DESIGN OF DEEP BEAM STRUCTURAL MEMBERS MADE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE ARE SOUGHT. PART I OF THE STUDIES DEALS WITH THE EFFECT PRODUCED ON THE STATE OF STRESS UNDER A CCNCENTRATED LOAD IN THE CRACKED STAGE BY THE TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF TENSILE CRACKS AT RIGHT ANGLES ON THE COMPRESSIVE FORCE. THIS REINFORCEMENT IS DESIGNATED BY THE TERM REINFORCEMENT AGAINST BURSTING, BY ANALOGY WITH THE REINFORCEMENT WHICH IS USED FOR A SIMILAR PURPOSE IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE MEMBERS. /RRL/
