STUDY OF THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF COMPACTED COHESIVE SOILS

ON THE BASES OF TEST RESULTS IT IS REPORTED THAT A RELATION EXISTS BETWEEN THE STIFFNESS COEFFICIENT M (0) (KP/CM2) AND THE MODULII OF TOTAL DEFORMATION E (0) (KP/CM2). FOR THE MATERIAL STUDIED THERE IS A CONVERSION POSSIBILITY IN THE COMPACTION RANGE OF THE FALLING (WET) ARM OF THE STANDARD DENSITY CURVE (PROCTOR CURVE) AS WELL AS FOR L (S) = 1.0 AND L (S) = 0.97 OF THE RISING (DRY) ARM OF THE CURVE. FROM THE CYLINDER COMPRESSION TEST O (D) (KP/CM2) IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN DATA REGARDING THE RELEVANT STIFFNESS COEFFICIENT M (0) (KP/CM2). FROM THE TESTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPORT THAT FOR COMPACTED SOIL THE STIFFNESS COEFFICIENT M (0) (KP/CM2), DOES NOT REACH ITS MAXIMUM VALUE AT W (OPT), BUT AT A LOWER WATER CONTENT. THE TEST RESULTS REPORTED WERE OBTAINED FOR A SOIL DESCRIBED AS "DOHNA LOESS CLAY", A TYPICAL WEAKLY COHESIVE SOIL AND REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SILT GRAIN SIZES. IN ORDER TO FILL THE GAP REFERRED TO IN THE INTRODUCTION AND TO PROVIDE COMPARABILITY OF THE COEFFICIENTS M (0) AND E (0) OR E (0') WITH THE LOAD BEARING COEFFICIENTS E (V2) OR E (VI), IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT PLATE LOADING TESTS SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT ON THE BASIS OF THE METHODS DESCRIBED.
