STIFFNESS ANALYSIS OF SUSPENSION BRIDGES BY ITERATION

THE STIFFNESS METHOD IS APPLIED TO THE NON-LINEAR ANALYSIS OF SUSPENSION BRIDGES BY MEANS OF SUCCESSIVE ITERATION. THE INTERNAL BAR FORCES ARE EVALUATED ON THE DEFORMED SHAPE OF EACH MEMBER AND THEN THE EQUILIBRIUM IS TESTED AT EVERY JOINT BETWEEN THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL LOADS. IF THE JOINT IS NOT IN EQUILIBRIUM, THE UNBALANCED FORCES ARE TAKEN AS THE NEW JOINT LOADS AND THE LINEAR STIFFNESS ANALYSIS IS REPEATED AS MANY TIMES AS NECESSARY, UNTIL THESE UNBALANCED JOINT LOADS DISAPPEAR. A SMALL NUMBER OF CYCLES IS SUFFICIENT TO OBTAIN THE EXACT RESULTS. /RRL/A/
