THE CLIMATIC CONDITIONS IN JAPAN CAN MAKE GREAT DEMANDS ON ROAD PAVEMENTS, WHICH IN THE EASE OF STANDARD TYPES OF PAVEMENT (WEARING COURSES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE) CAN LEAD TO EXCESSIVE WEAR OR INADEQUATE SHEAR STRENGTH. IN A NUMBER OF PROJECTS THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE TO WEARING COURSES OF HOT ROLLED AND POURED ASPHALT, BOTH USING BINDERS CONSISTING OF A BITUMEN-TRINIDAD MIXTURE. IN THE CASE OF A ROAD AT AN ELEVATION OF 2000 TO 2500 M WHICH IS COVERED WITH 10 M OF SNOW IN THE WINTER A BINDER CONTENT OF 9.9 PERCENT CONSISTING OF 4,16 PERCENT OF TRINIDAD-EPURE AND 5,74 PERCENT OF BITUMEN 200/300 WAS SELECTED. ON ANOTHER PROJECT A MIXTURE OF 2,88 PERCENT EPURE AND 5,72 PERCENT BITUMEN 80/100 WAS USED. THIS WAS A ROAD WITH VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC AT A HEIGHT OF 500 M. IN THE CASE OF A ROAD THROUGH A TUNNEL SUBJECT TO HEAVY TRAFFIC WITH SNOW CHAINS AND SPIKED TYRES THE STRETCH IN THE INTERIOR WAS POURED ASPHALT WITH A BINDER OF APPROXIMATELY 2 PERCENT TRINIDAD-EPURE AND 8 PERCENT OF BITUMEN 80/100, WHEREAS AT THE TUNNEL ENTRANCE THE PROPORTIONS WERE 3.5 PERCENT EPURE AND 6.5 PERCENT BITUMEN 80/100. A BRIDGE PAVEMENT HAD AN ADDITION OF EPURE ONLY IN THE UPPER LAYER.
