LATERAL RIGIDITY OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE
THE APPROXIMATE METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND FORMULAS CONCERNING THE NATURAL FREQUENCIES OF VIBRATION, THE DEFLECTION DUE TO LATERAL LOADS, AND THE REDUCED BENDING RIGIDITY OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE IN ITS LATERAL DIRECTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS CONCERNED ARE SOLVED UNDER THE ASSUMPTION OF A FOURIER-SERIES SOLUTION, AND THE ENERGY METHOD IS ALSO APPLIED TO OBTAIN THE NATURAL FREQUENCIES. THE PRESENT THEORETICAL TREATMENTS ARE BELIEVED TO YIELD PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS WITH SUFFICIENT ACCURACY, AND THE FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM WILL BE USEFUL FOR ITS ANALYTICAL STUDY AND FOR UNDERSTANDING ITS GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS. /RRL/A/
