THE EFFECT OF SUNLIGHT, TRAFFIC LOADING, STUDS AND DE-ICING SALT RESULT IN PERMANENT DEFORMATION AND WEAR OF HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS. IN RECENT YEARS, SCARIFYING AND DE-SCALING EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF TRACKING GROOVES AND TRANSVERSE GROOVES. BOTH COLD AND WARM SCARIFIERS CAN BE EMPLOYED OF VARIOUS CAPACITIES AND WIDTH OF SCARIFYING. THE ALFELDER ROAD SCARIFYER TYPE 50, HAS A SPEED OF ADVANCE OF 2 TO 3 M/S AND AN ADJUSTABLE SCARIFYING WIDTH UP TO 200 MM. WHERE DE-SCALING IS EMPLOYED, THE BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT IS FIRST HEATED BY PROPANE GAS BURNERS TO A TEMPERATURE OF BETWEEN 120 DEG C AND 200 DEG C. THE REPAVE TECHNIQUE IS DEVELOPED BY SCHOELKOPF AND IS A NEW DEVELOPMENT; HERE THE MATERIAL SCRAPED OFF IS RE-USED, SO THAT A MATERIAL SAVING OF 60% RESULTS. IN THE RE-FORMING TECHNIQUE THE FINISHER FOLLOWING AT A DISTANCE OF 15 M LAYS AN ADDITIONAL PAVEMENT. REPAVE AND RE-FORMING TECHNIQUES HAVE ALREADY BEEN TESTED AND GIVEN EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD RESULTS, WHICH HAVE BEEN CHECKED BY MEANS OF CORE BORINGS.
