THE DEVELOPMENT OF COLOGNE GUSSASPHALT - EXPERIENCE GAINED WITH THIS AND THE EFFECTS ON FUTURE GUSSASPHALT CONSTRUCTION METHODS

ENTWICKLUNG DES KOELNER GUSSASPHALTS, DIE HIERMIT GEWONNENEN ERFAHRUNGEN UND MOEGLICHE AUSWIRKUNGEN AUF DIE ZUKUENFTIGEN GUSSASPHALTBAUWEISEN

DAMAGE TO ROAD SURFACES CAUSED BY TYRES WITH WINTER SPIKES REQUIRES THE HIGHWAY ENGINEER TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNOLOGY. ATTEMPTS TO GRIND OFF THE WEARING COURSES AND LAY A REPLACEMENT COURSE WITH GUSSASPHALT, OR TO IMPROVE EACH LANE SEPARATELY, HAVE NOT RESULTED IN SUCCESS DUE TO THEIR PROHIBITIVE COSTS. IN THE SUMMER OF 1971 AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD WAS CONSTRUCTED ON THE A3 NEAR LEVERKUSEN. GUSSASPHALT 0/5 MM AND 0/8 MM WAS USED, THE LATTER IN ITS NORMAL FORM WITH A DESIRED GAP GRADING AND WITH AN INDIA RUBBER ADDITIVE AND EVERY COURSE WAS ROLLED WITH A PNEUMATIC WHEELED ROLLER AND A SMOOTH WHEELED ROLLER. THE PNEUMATIC WHEELED ROLLER WAS USED TO CLOSE LARGE VOIDS AND HOLLOWS AND TO ROLL THE DRESSING OF 5/8 MM CHIPPINGS INTO THE SURFACE. THESE CHIPPINGS WERE COATED WITH A BINDER OF 1.0 TO 1.2 PER CENT BY WEIGHT AT AN AVERAGE DENSITY OF 15 KG PER SQUARE METRE OF WHICH UP TO 10 KG PER SQUARE METRE WERE BOUND IN. THOSE CHIPPINGS NOT BOUND IN HAD TO BE REMOVED. THE ROAD SURFACE HAS A HIGH INITIAL SKID-RESISTANCE DUE TO THE SURFACE DRESSING. COEFFICIENTS OF FRICTION OF 0.4 WERE MEASURED UP TO 80 KM PER HOUR. ROLLED GUSSASPHALT (COLOGNE-GUSSASPHALT) HAS A SPECIAL APPLICATION IN PLACES WHERE IT IS LAID ON AN OLD BINDER, SINCE BY ROLLING THE FORMATION OF LARGE VOIDS, HOLLOWS AND CRATERS ON THE SURFACE CAN BE PREVENTED.
