FOURTH PROGRESS REPORT ON THE COLUMN TESTS MADE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

A SERIES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMN TESTS WAS MADE TO STUDY THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CHANGES IN STRESS DISTRIBUTION CAUSED BY SHRINKAGE AND PLASTIC FLOW OF CONCRETE OVER A PERIOD OF A YEAR OR MORE, AND TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF SUCH CHANGES UPON THE ULTIMATE COLUMN STRENGTH, AS SHOWN BY A TEST TO FAILURE. IN ADDITION TO THE REINFORCED COLUMNS, THERE WERE PLAIN COLUMNS OF SIMILAR DIMENSIONS AND MATERIALS. TESTS WERE MADE TO DETERMINE WHETHER ANY EFFECT OF SCALE EXISTED BETWEEN SMALL TEST COLUMNS AND COLUMNS THE SIZE USED IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION. AN ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS OF SPIRALLY REINFORCED COLUMNS IS PRESENTED. COLUMNS IN WHICH A PROTECTIVE SHELL OF CONCRETE WAS USED OUTSIDE THE REINFORCING SPIRALS WERE INVESTIGATED.
