FOURTH PROGRESS REPORT ON COLUMN TESTS AT LEHIGH UNIVERSITY

THE BEHAVIOR OF REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS UNDER SUSTAINED WORKING LOADS IS STUDIED AND A DETERMINATION MADE OF THE EFFECT OF SUCH SUSTAINED LOADING ON THE DEFORMATIONS AND STRENGTH WHEN TESTED TO FAILURE. DISCUSSION IS MADE AND TEST DATA ARE GIVEN ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE CONCRETE AT THE AGE OF 6 WEEKS, THE RELATION BETWEEN 52 AND 2 WEEKS RESULTS FOR FLOW AND SHRINKAGE, CRACKING OF COLUMNS DURING RELEASE OF WORKING LOAD, DISTRIBUTION OF LOAD ON THE COLUMN, EFFECT OF STRENGTH OF CONCRETE ON LOAD CARRIED BY CONCRETE AT A GIVEN DEFORMATION, EFFECT OF AMOUNT OF LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT AND OF SPIRAL REINFORCEMENT ON LOAD ATTRIBUTED TO THE CONCRETE AT A GIVEN DEFORMATION, EFFECT OF SUSTAINED LOAD ON DEFORMATION AND STRENGTH OF COLUMN, EFFECT OF AMOUNT OF LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT OR OF SPIRAL REINFORCEMENT ON THE STRENGTH OF COLUMN, AND FACTOR OF SAFETY.
