THE AIM WAS TO DERIVE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF INTERACTIVE VIDEO DISPLAY TECHNIQUE WITH REFERENCE TO ITS USE IN HIGHWAY DESIGN, ESPECIALLY FOR OPTIMISATION PROBLEMS. AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM INTAK (INTERACTIVE CONSTRUCTION SITE) WAS SET UP, WHICH ENABLES PROBLEMS IN HIGHWAY DESIGN SUCH AS TYPICAL DESIGN TASKS TO BE DEALT WITH. THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF INTERACTIVE VIDEO TECHNIQUE AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CDC SYSTEM 1700 ARE CONCISELY DESCRIBED AND ADVICE IS GIVEN CONCERNING THE CONSTRUCTION OF INTERACTIVE VIDEO DISPLAY PROGRAMS. SUGGESTIONS ARE ALSO GIVEN FOR THE USE OF INTERACTIVE VIDEO SYSTEMS FOR OPTIMISATION PROGRAMS. THE STUDY SHOWS THAT INTERACTIVE VIDEO TECHNIQUE CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED AT MANY POINTS IN HIGHWAY DESIGN. HOWEVER THE COST IN HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TERMS FOR THE INTERACTIVE CONTROL OF LARGE PROGRAMS FOR INSTANCE FOR OPTIMISATION IS VERY GREAT. THEREFORE POSSIBILITIES OF EMPLOYMENT REALISABLE IN THE SHORT TERM MUST BE SOUGHT ESPECIALLY IN THOSE AREAS WHERE INTERACTIVE VIDEO TECHNIQUE CAN BE USED WITH INDEPENDENT PROGRAMS TO SUPPLEMENT EXISTING DATA PROCESSING SYSTEMS.
