HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS IN STRUCTURAL JOINTS-A SYMPOSIUM
PAPERS PRESENTED AT THIS SUMPOSIUM GIVE A BRIEF HISTORY OF RIVETING, AND LABORATORY TESTS OF BOLTED JOINTS. RESULTS ARE SUMMARIZED OF STATIC AND FATIGUE TESTS ON STRUCTURAL JOINTS FOR WHICH HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL BOLTS WERE USED AS FASTENERS. THE TESTS INDICATE THAT JOINTS OF THIS TYPE ARE GENERALLY SUPERIOR TO SIMILAR RIVETED JOINTS WHEN SUBJECTED TO STATIC OR FATIGUE-TYPE LOADS. A COMPARISON IS PRESENTED OF THE BEHAVIOR OF BOLTED JOINTS AND RIVETED JOINTS SUBJECTED TO STATIC AND FATIGUE LOADS. THIS COMPARISON IS BASED ON TESTS OF BUTT JOINTS HAVING A TENSION-SHEAR-VARYING STRESS RELATIONSHIP OF APPROXIMATELY 1.00:75:1.50. THE FASTENERS WERE HOT-DRIVEN RIVETS, COLD-DRIVEN RIVETS AND HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS. THE CLAMPING FORCE OF A FASTENER WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS AFFECTING THE FATIGUE STRESS OF A JOINT. THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE BOLTED JOINTS WAS GREATER THAN THOSE OF THE RIVETED JOINTS. AN INVESTIGATION WAS REPORTED TO DETERMINE THE SLIP OF STRUCTURAL STEEL-LAP JOINTS ASSEMBLED WITH HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS WHEN SUBJECTED TO STRESSES IN THE DESIGN RANGE AND SOMEWHAT BEYOND. THE JOINTS WERE SUBJECTED TO SHORT-TIME STATIC LOADING. OF THE PRINCIPAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE SLIP OF THE JOINT, THOSE STUDIED INCLUDED SUCH DIMENSIONAL PROPERTIES AS THE TOTAL JOINING AREA, THE NET CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA, THE THICKNESS OF LAP PLATES, AND THE NUMBER OF ROWS OF BOLTS IN THE JOINTS. OTHER PROPERTIES STUDIED INCLUDED BOLT TENSION AND SURFACE CONDITION OF THE JOINING AREAS. THE JOINTS WERE COMPARED ON THE BASIS OF THE SHEARING STRESS ON THE BOLTS, THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION AND THE SLIP (BOTH DEVELOPED AT THE FIRST MAJOR SLIP), AND THE STRESS ON THE NET CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA. A WORKING HYPOTHESIS IS PRESENTED TO EXPLAIN RATIONALLY THE CAUSE OF, AND REMEDY FOR, FATIGUE FAILURES IN STRUCTURAL JOINTS. A CORRELATION OF RESULTS IS PRESENTED OF A NUMBER OF FATIGUE TESTS OF DOUBLE-LAP JOINTS MADE IN THE U.S. STRUCTURAL USES OF HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS ARE PRESENTED. OF PRIMARY INTEREST HAS BEEN THE USE OF HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS IN JOINTS THAT TRANSMIT SHEAR. THE COST IS NEARLY THE SAME AS THAT FOR RIVETED JOINTS. EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF HIGH- STRENGTH BOLTS IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION ARE PRESENTED.
