FOAM BARRIERS--ABS VIEWPOINT
Foam barrier containment systems for the transportation of LNG are being developed in the United States by a number of aerospace industries using expertise developed from the space program which has successfully transported man to the moon and back. This wealth of information is being used to develop containment systems for LNG transportation on board ships accepting normal shipyard techniques and tolerances of construction. The cost of LNG vessels running at approximately one hundred million dollars for a 125,000 cubic meter vessel, and the LNG containment systems consume about 25% of this amount. Any acceptable innovation which will reduce the capital investment in LNG vessels will reduce the costs all the way along the line, and, eventually, to the consumer. This logic may predicate that a foam barrier type system could become a major containment medium for LNG vessels some time in the future provided a high degree of confidence is obtained from prototype testing. A testing program is outlined in this paper.
