DESIGN OF TUNNELS IN SOFT ROCKS

ZUR TUNNELBERECHNUNG IN DRUCKHAFTEM GEBIRGE

THE RELATIVELY LARGE DEFORMATIONS OF THE ORDER OF SEVERAL HUNDRED MILLIMETRES OBSERVED IN LONG LENGTHS OF THE TAUERN TUNNEL AND LATER IN THE ARLBERG TUNNEL HAVE LED THE AUTHOR TO SEEK A METHOD OF CALCULATION WHICH PERMITS DETERMINATION OF THESE DEFORMATIONS WITH LITTLE EFFORT AND IF POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE AID OF A COMPUTER. THE ROCK PARAMETERS REQUIRED FOR THE ANALYSIS SHOULD BE CAPABLE OF BEING DETERMINED WITH THE AID OF SMALL HAND SAMPLES OR DRILL CORES. THE COMPREHENSIVE MEASUREMENTS ORDERED BY THE CLIENTS IN THE CASE OF THE ARLBERG TUNNEL - MAINLY CONVERGENCE MEASUREMENTS MADE AT INTERVALS OF 10 M - FINALLY PERMITTED VERIFICATION AND CALIBRATION OF THE METHOD. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE HANS-CLOOS CONFERENCE ON GEOMECHANICS, HELD 14TH & 15TH OCTOBER, 1976, IN SALZBURG.
