THE NATURE OF SHEAR RESISTANCE IN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS
SHEARING FORCES IN A REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM WITHOUT WEB REINFORCEMENT CAN BE RESISTED BY BEAM ACTION AND ARCH ACTION. THE FORMER CONSISTS OF THE COMBINED RESISTANCE OF DOWEL ACTION, AGGREGATE INTERLOCKING ACROSS CRACKS AND THE FLEXURAL RESISTANCE OF THE CONCRETE CANTILEVERS BOUNDED BY THE CRACKS. ARCH ACTION DEVELOPS BY THE INCLINATION OF THE INTERNAL COMPRESSION FORCE IN A BEAM AND ATTAINS ITS FULL CAPACITY AFTER THE BREAKDOWN OF BEAM ACTION. EXPERIMENTS INDICATE THE RELATIVE CONTRIBUTION OF THE DIFFERENT ACTIONS TOWARDS ULTIMATE CAPACITY. /AUTHOR/
