THE BEHAVIOR OF COMPOSITE STEEL AND LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE BEAMS
RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR TESTS ON FIVE SMALL-SCALE COMPOSITE BEAMS WITH LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE SLABS AND ONE BEAM WITH A NORMAL WEIGHT CONCRETE SLAB. ALL BEAMS WERE PROVIDED WITH ADEQUATE SHEAR CONNECTIONS PROPORTIONED ACCORDING TO THE PRINCIPLES OF CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS FOR COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION. THE LOSSES IN COMPOSITE ACTION WOULD APPEAR TO BE LESS FOR THE BEAMS WITH LIGHTWEIGHT SLABS THAN FOR SIMILAR BEAMS WITH NORMAL WEIGHT SLABS. IN FIVE OF THE BEAMS, FAILURE OCCURRED BY PUNCHING OUT OF WEDGES OF CONCRETE FROM IN FRONT OF THE CONNECTORS. THE MEASURED ULTIMATE LOADS WERE, HOWEVER, ALL IN EXCESS OF THE THEORETICAL ULTIMATE LOADS DETERMINED ACCORDING TO SIMPLE PLASTIC THEORY. /AUTHOR/
