LOW FRICTION SLIDING SURFACES FOR BRIDGE BEARINGS: PTFE WEAVE
MANY BRIDGE BEARINGS INCORPORATE LOW FRICTION POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE LAYERS TO ACCOMMODATE MULTI- DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENTS OF THE BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE. THIS INVESTIGATION, ON A POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE WEAVE, SHOWS THAT BEARINGS OF THIS TYPE CANNOT BE SPECIFIED SOLELY BY A VALUE FOR THE DYNAMIC COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION. THE PERFORMANCE OVER A RANGE OF PRACTICAL CONDITIONS INDICATES THAT THE FRICTION MECHANISM IS OF A COMPLEX NATURE, AND SHOWS REGIONS OF DISTINCTIVE BEHAVIOUR. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED WHICH CONFIRM THE DECREASE OF FRICTIONAL COEFFICIENTS WITH INCREASING LOAD AND DECREASING SLIDING SPEED. SURFACE WEAR AND THE TRANSFER OF POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE TO THE STEEL SLIDER ARE DISCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
