PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS AS CONFLICT POINTS

KONFLIKTSTELLE FUSSGAENGERSTREIFEN

THIS INVESTIGATION ATTEMPTS TO SHOW THE FACTORS WHICH PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERACTION PROCESSES BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS AND MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS. IN THE FIRST SECTION THE DIFFERENT PEDESTRIAN BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS AND PEDESTRIAN TYPES ARE INVESTIGATED AND THEIR EFFECT UPON THE READINESS OF DRIVERS TO STOP IS DISCUSSED. THE MOST INTERESTING FACTORS IN RELATION TO DRIVERS ARE THOSE WHICH IT CAN BE ASSUMED WILL FUNDAMENTALLY INFLUENCE THEIR BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS PEDESTRIANS. A FURTHER PART OF THE INVESTIGATION CONSIDERS A GROUP PARTICULARLY AT-RISK, NAMELY THE ELDERLY PEDESTRIANS. RESULTS SHOW THAT THE CONFLICT SITUATION AT PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS CAN BE DE-FUSED IF DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS WOULD DEAL BETTER WITH THEIR COMMUNICATIONS POSSIBILITIES. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE, FOR THE MOST PART, AWARE OF THESE POSSIBILITIES BUT MAKE LITTLE USE OF THEM IN THE CONCRETE TRAFFIC SITUATION. THE RESULTS DESCRIBED CALL FOR A DISCUSSION BY ALL THE INSTITUTIONS INVOLVED IN THE SUBJECT OF ROAD SAFETY, SINCE DISCREPANCIES ARE SEEN HERE BETWEEN THE LEGISLATIVE AND ACTUAL ASPECTS, BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE SAFETY. WHETHER UNDERSTANDING AND DISCRETION ON THE PART OF DRIVERS ALONE IS SUFFICIENT TO OVERCOME THE CONFLICT SITUATION NOW BECOMING EVIDENT AT PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS, MUST REMAIN, AT LEAST, DOUBTFUL.
