A MODEL TO SIMULATE TRAFFIC FLOW ON MULTI-LANE DIRECTIONAL CARRIAGEWAYS IS BEING DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE INFLUENCE OF GENERAL SPEED LIMITS AND SPEED LIMITS AIMED AT INDIVIDUAL GROUPS OF VEHICLES (LORRIES, BUSES) ON SAFETY AND CAPACITY. THE PROGRAMME OF WORK COMPRISES THE PRODUCTION OF A TIME BAND FOR FREE FLOW AT THE INITIAL CROSS-SECTION BY MEANS OF RANDOM COUNTS, THE DERIVATION OF DESIRED SPEEDS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL VEHICLES ON THE BASIS OF ASSUMED OR MEASURED SPEED DISTRIBUTIONS, THE ASSIGNMENT OF CHARACTERISTIC HANDLING PROPERTIES TO EACH VEHICLE, THE STATISTICAL DETERMINATION OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON A GIVEN SECTION OF ROAD, INCLUDING NUMBERS OF ACCELERATIONS AND DECELERATIONS, DELAY TIME, LENGTH OF COLUMNS ETC., AND THE EVALUATION OF THIS TRAFFIC FLOW. IT IS ALSO INTENDED TO MEASURE THE SPEEDS OF INDIVIDUAL GROUPS OF VEHICLES.
