THE IMPACT ABRASION STRENGTH OF ROAD AGGREGATES IS CURRENTLY DETERMINED IN AUSTRIA BY MEANS OF THE MODIFIED LOS ANGELES TEST. AS IN MANY CASES THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OBTAINED BY THIS METHOD DO NOT REPRODUCE THE ACTUAL STRESS ON THE STONE IN PRACTICE, AN ATTEMPT IS TO BE MADE BY CONVERTING THE TEST EQUIPMENT (MODIFICATION OF THE COOPERATING PLATE WITH REGARD TO DIMENSIONS AND ANGLE OF INCLINATION) OR VARIATION OF THE PARAMETERS (NUMBER OF REVOLUTIONS, NUMBER OF TOTAL REVOLUTIONS, NUMBER OF PARTICLES AND PARTICLE SIZE) TO INFLUENCE BOTH IMPACT AND ABRASION TO SIMULATE PRACTICAL STRESS. THE TESTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT ON FOUR ROCKS: BASALT, GRANULITE, GRANITE AND DOLOMITE. RESTRICTION OF THE TESTS TO THESE FOUR ROCKS WHICH ARE IMPORTANT FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION SHOULD ENSURE THAT THE STUDY IS UNDERTAKEN UNDER VERY ACCURATELY DEFINED CONDITIONS WITH THE GREATEST POSSIBLE PRECISION. THE TESTS CAN BE EXTENDED TO INCLUDE OTHER ROCKS AFTER THESE RESULTS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED. THE RESEARCH RESULTS SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO BE USED FOR AN INTENDED LATER STANDARDIZATION OF THE TEST EQUIPMENT AND THE TEST METHOD.
