PRINCIPLES FOR CALCULATING THE RESTRAINING ACTION OF BORED PILES AND SLURRY TRENCH WALL SECTIONS

RECENT DRILLING AND PILING TECHNOLOGY HAS MEANT THAT VERY OFTEN ROAD BRIDGES ARE NO LONGER FOUNDED ON ABUTMENTS AND PILES WITH SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS OR PILE GRILLAGES, BUT THAT LARGE-DIMENSION INDIVIDUAL PILES OR SLURRY TRENCH WALL SECTIONS ARE CONSTRUCTED AS SINGLE COLUMNS AND SECURED TIGHTLY BELOW THE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE BY MEANS OF A TRANSVERSE SPANNING MEMBER. THE ECONOMIC ADVANTAGES OF SUCH METHODS ARE DUE TO THE FACT THAT PILE GRILLAGES AND INCLINED BORED PILES CAN BE ELIMINATED. THE HORIZONTAL EMBEDMENT OF VERTICAL INDIVIDUAL PILES IN RELATION TO THE DETERMINATIVE SOIL COEFFICIENTS, THE DEPTH AND WIDTH OF THE PILE AND ITS RIGIDITY, THE GROUND WATER LEVEL AND OTHER INFLUENCES HAS BEEN INSUFFICIENTLY RESEARCHED IN SOIL MECHANICS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO DETERMINE THE EXPECTED STRESSES ON THE BORED PILE OR THE SLURRY TRENCH WALL SECTION FOR A GIVEN SUBSOIL WHICH HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF BOREHOLES. AFTER THE RESULTS OBTAINED HAVE BEEN SUPPLEMENTED BY MODEL TESTS IN THE EARTHWORKS LABORATORY, THE CONFORMITY BETWEEN STRESS AND DEFORMATION OF THE PILE OR SLURRY TRENCH WALL SECTION IN RELATION TO THE TYPE OF SOIL IS TO BE DETERMINED ON A SCIENTIFIC BASIS.
