STUDY OF BRIDGE SEALS

IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE NECESSARY TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS OF BRIDGE SEALS AND TO SUPPLEMENT THE QUALITY SPECIFICATIONS FOR SEALING MATERIALS, IT SEEMED TO BE PARTICULARLY VALUABLE FROM A TECHNICAL POINT OF VIEW TO CARRY OUT TESTS ON FINISHED AND TRAFFICKED BRIDGE SEALANTS. THE OBJECT OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT THEREFORE IS TO EXAMINE ALL TYPES OF INSULATING MATERIAL CURRENTLY USED IN BRIDGES TO ESTABLISH PROPERTIES NOTED SINCE THEIR INCORPORATION, ACCOUNT BEING TAKEN OF THE BRIDGE STRUCTURES, ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, WEATHER CONDITIONS DURING INCORPORATION, AND TRAFFIC DENSITY. THEREFORE SAMPLES OF INSULATING MATERIAL ARE TO BE TAKEN FROM FIVE FEDERAL GERMAN ROAD BRIDGES, AND THE INSULATIONS ARE TO BE STUDIED. MOREOVER TEST INSULATIONS ARE TO BE INSTALLED ON A ROAD BRIDGE IN THE TYROL, SAMPLES OF WHICH ARE TO BE REMOVED DURING INCORPORATION AND AFTER A PERIOD OF TRAFFIC LOADING. THE SAMPLES OF SEALING MATERIAL ARE TO BE EXAMINED FOR CONDITION, DEFORMATION OR DETERIORATION WHICH HAS TAKEN PLACE, SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE WHOLE SEAL, BILATERAL ADHESION AND COMPATIBILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL LAYERS, THE STATE OF THE INSERTS AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE BITUMEN. MOREOVER TEMPERATURE SENSORS ARE TO BE INCORPORATED INTO THE EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS IN ORDER TO DETERMINE EXTREME TEMPERATURE STRESS.
