INFLATION A WORLD-WIDE DISASTER

In this work, economist Irving S. Friedman examines present-day inflation, not merely as a United States problem but as a world-wide eqidemic generating economic and social dislocation on a global scale. In the past, the author notes, the experiences of inflation were generally local and temporary. The book analyzes why the policies followed by governments since World War II have resulted in continuing inflation reflected in rising prices and wages, with their even more destructive consequences. The author explores how the anticipations and demands of modern societies are outrunning their ability to produce, with the result that we are upsetting the balance of economic life in much the same way that we have upset the environment. Further, Freidman stresses, many of our social problems, such as urban decay and increasing crime, are intensified by the effects of persistent global inflation.
